In reference to my paintings
The images we see of paintings in art history books distort the reality of the paintings themselves. At the same time these “not-quite-true” images set the standard for what is valued and by omission, of what is not. Beginning with shapes and colors cut from such images, I create abstract works that evolve with equal measure of chance and deliberation. Paint, shape and printed images are used to produce work that is multilayered in both form and meaning. At what range do we focus our eyes; at what are we directed to look; and in which context do we view an image? Foreground, middle-ground, and background shift and transform as whole images are contained within the details of larger parts. Always the drive is to make images that intrigue and satisfy my eyes and thoughts.
